Four pistons.

The 1.6 Fusca boxer in your buggy is one of the simplest engines ever made — which means you can understand it and fix most things yourself.

Four cylinders lie flat, two on each side, pistons punching outward and inward like boxers' fists. This keeps the engine low and naturally balanced, which is why it runs smooth and fits under a buggy's rear.
Four strokes
Each piston repeats: Intake (sucks fuel + air), Compression (squeezes it), Power (spark ignites it, pushes piston), Exhaust (pushes burnt gas out). Firing order is 1-4-3-2.
Air cooling
No radiator. The big fan on the generator shaft blows air through the shroud, across the cylinder fins and the oil cooler. Missing tin panels or a slipping fan belt = overheating fast.
Oil is also coolant
About 2.5 L of oil lubricates AND carries heat away. Low oil or the wrong type hurts much faster than in a water-cooled car. The red oil light means stop the engine now.
Fuel: the carburetor
The carburetor mixes gasoline with air using suction from the engine. Dirty jets, a sticking float or air leaks cause stalling, hesitation and hard starts.
Spark: ignition
Coil makes high voltage, the distributor sends it to each spark plug at the right moment. Worn points, wrong timing or bad plug wires give misfires and weak power.

Start here before opening the toolbox.
Won't start
Fuel reaching carb? Spark at plug? Battery above 12.4 V? Points gap 0.4 mm.
Overheats / oil light
Stop. Check oil level, fan belt tension (~15 mm deflection), all cooling tins installed.
Backfires / pops
Timing off, vacuum leak at intake boots, or valves too tight — adjust cold at 0.15 mm.
Battery not charging
Fan belt slipping, generator brushes worn, or voltage regulator failed.
Oil leaks
Common and normal-ish: valve cover gaskets, oil pressure switch, pushrod tube seals.
Rough idle
Clean the idle jet, sync twin carbs, check for cracked vacuum hoses.
Safety: disconnect the battery for electrical work and never leave fuel leaks near a hot engine.
